Black History Month is wonderful. But the best thing about our history is that it’s not going anywhere. It’ll be there for us whenever we need it. But the present? That can slip through our hands like water if we don’t pay attention—water that can thin the “gumbo” and dilute its flavor.

So, for the next twenty-eight days, I propose we kick off a celebration of Black Present Month by gifting ourselves with wonderful creations by inspired artists and writers currently putting pen to paper and digit to keyboard. What’s out there now that we can pluck from the shelves or add to our feeds?

And for those of us who feel the drive to create as well as consume? Well, a Black Future Month is in order. The pot’s waiting.

Throw something new in it.

Gorgon II by Joao Ruas (São Paulo)

Not so teenage medusa. Medusa and gorgon images have become really important to me after finishing my project and this is so beautiful. Pretty, pretty.

Together At Last of the Day: I have no idea what you’re talking about… so here’s former architectural drafting major Ice Cube conducting a video tour of the Eames House for the SoCal art initiative Pacific Standard Time.

[pst.]

This is just so great. I’m glad to see Ice Cube is an architecture nerd (like myself). Also, the interview with NY Times at the link is so good. I just love people having something REAL to say about where they’re from. So good!

Had a great time at the Peace Market held by Esperanza Peace & Justice Center. La Raza!! I rode my bike there because the weather was so nice today and I would say they had a wonderful turn-out. Everything was so unique and had a story. So did many of the artists. I made 3 purchases that I was happy to spend money on:
The top left is called Reina de Esperanza by Perla (I can’t remember her last name right now). She had a Reina collection and another one of my favorites was called Reina de Picasso which had a bunch of different pieces make up her face. Everything was so colorful and was made from recycled materials. She told me she shows at other craft fairs frequently so I’ll have to check her out in the future.
The photo on the bottom right is a close up of a photograph I bought from Jorge Sandoval. It’s a photo of a mural that’s on the Westside of town. I probably could’ve gone down and taken the picture myself but he had a lot of great shots of San Antonio and was really nice.
My third purchase was a handmade apron shown here. So cute and I wore it for half the day after I bought it for no reason. Pretty excited about that purchase! The other two pictures are just of the event and the Esperanza Center. I should have brought my Nikon because I often forget that going to these unique events you see a lot of interesting people. Vendors and shoppers alike. I had fun today.

You know what Hollywood?

/begin rant

You’re boring and no one likes you. I don’t even know what a Bradley Cooper is and Ryan Gosling looks like Macaulay Culkin so the answer is still no. Yes, so glad white people are still the most sexy people in La La Land. So glad that their teeth are straight and they grow the acceptable amount of facial hair.

Also, your movies are awful. I saw Take Shelter this weekend. It was great and it was actually an original screenplay. How…original. I also like Michael Shannon’s face. It has more personality than any of the people you tout as beautiful. Have other people heard of it? Are people talking about it? Well, not much but at least Jack and Jill is doing well. Everything else you’ve done this year has been overhyped. Here’s an idea: how about not putting out previews to your awful films a year and a half in advance and actually work on making a great movie.
Movies I saw this year in a theater: Super 8 - no. Nice action scenes but I hated all these kids. And I love kid gangs in movies (see Goonies, Stand By Me, Now and Then, Babysitters’ Club).
That Planet of the Apes thing - I’m tired of seeing serious James Franco. Who takes him seriously? Thanks for John Lithgow though!
Contagion
and Bridesmaids - finally something right.
Also, surprisingly Source Code was good but I didn’t see it in theaters so you lose again Hollywood. I’m making it seem as though independent films don’t count but Another Earth was gorgeous and I’m glad I spent time seeing it.
You have failed in making me think this year would be good for movies with your snippets, exclusive trailers and alluring posters with that actor or actress wearing their fancy costume. Truth is, I forgot about more than half of those movies when release time came. And I will forget about the ones you are shoving down my throat now.

Robert De Niro, you don’t need the money that bad. Why you’ve chosen to be in New Year’s Eve (and some other questionable films these past few years) is beyond me. Sure Beaches and The Princess Diaries were good but this guy is like the Nicholas Sparks of directing. Just stop acting or just say no. Have some dignity man!

I still have these films I want to see this year (minus Take Shelter) but otherwise I despise you Hollywood. You are a spineless, egotistical, vacuous soul. You’ve always had the egotistical part but at least could make good movies. Go rehab yourself just like the rest of the starlets you use and throw away and come back with actual content worth viewing. I am just so sick of bad movies lately. I can’t be the only one who sees this right? Right?!

p.s. I don’t care about my punctuation right now. I’m planning a theater opening. (As soon as I pay off my student loan and then win a million dollars to do so)

Trying my best to come off as sincere in my drawings & then I feel a little silly afterwards. Partly because I can’t really draw, mostly because it’s kitschy. I guess I’ll grow to like it since I don’t want to rip up my pages in the sketchbook. (Taken with instagram)

One of my favorites I’ve done so far. Based off of the Yoruba tribe proverb: if I am tall it is because I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors. Can’t wait to scan these and fully share all I’ve done with my sketchbook project. (Taken with instagram)

I haven’t even turned in my filled-out lease application yet and am already surmising that I will be spending a large amount of time at Home Depot and maybe the Ikea store way in Round Rock. The design challenges of a smaller place will be really difficult but I am so thankful for google images and Apartment Therapy. The hardest part will be that the apartment is not a complete railroad design. It’s more of an backward L-shape. I’m pretty aware of where my bed will go. The bottom L part is to the left of the front door so it will go there. I’m thinking my beautiful bed frame is going to have to be left out of this move though. Just one more thing to stub my toe on.
My kitchen is straight ahead from the door so I’m wondering how I will have a couch, chaise, or a couple of chairs. I love the couch I have but it’s way too bulky. I might need something a lot simpler. I could do a chaise and a nice chair. I’m thinking I want to make my own bar table with a stool if I can’t find one thrifting. It would probably make for a good place to eat and to work off of. I like this collapsible wall-mounted table too:
I want to partition off the space with my bed with a gauzy curtain and maybe one of the smaller Ikea Expedit bookshelves, although I think if I made a series of sturdy milk crates attached together that may work (and may be a cheaper solution). Totally not my style but I could probably paint them. I could find some way to make them less grungy and more cutesy. Speaking of paint, I’m am so allowed to paint my space! I like that blue in that first picture. I’m liking the idea of a light green also but am interested in pretty wallpaper such as this. I probably wouldn’t do all the walls. Color-blocking seems to be a good idea. I have some cute artwork to hang but a part of me really likes white walls. Color-blocking seems like a good way to just get a splash of color without it being overwhelming.
I think the difficulty in doing this is that I like a lot of styles. Vintage is probably my favorite but bright colors that make things look overly futuristic is fun too. Simplicity is key also so I just want to have the best storage. The bathroom and bedroom have lots of shelves but my freestanding storage boxes and chests will have to fit somehow in the process. I think I could take a few tips from nice hotels. I forget how comfy hotel rooms are despite their size. I want to have a place like that only more unique.
The idea of it being completely D.I.Y. will be difficult too. You don’t often find good furniture or decorating pieces for spaces this size. A lot of things will have to be modified or made from scratch. That will be pretty scary but this will be project numero 2. I’m pretty excited and will be crossing my fingers that the application gets the go-ahead and I can get to work!

(maybe Dad will help :)
